Build a Relationship

Tell Your Story

Own the Process
Overview
Developing a relationship with a student is key to helping the individual to write authentic, creative, and well-written college application essays. I take great pride in the time I spend helping each student to discover his or her own voice, insisting that authenticity is essential. I encourage honesty and have found that when a student writes from the heart, success is almost inevitable. I ask the following: avoid the typical; paint a small picture; do not lecture; avoid clichés; never restate the resume; be humble; answer the question; write well; and that mistakes convey laziness. Most importantly, I ask that each student OWNS THE PROCESS!
Most competitive colleges insist that students not only write what used to be called a personal statement (typically a 650-word essay) but that they also write supplemental essays that are unique for each school. These essays range in word count and topic, and I will also offer guidance regarding strategies to tackle them well. As a result of the years I have spent working on this process with students, I am well aware of what most colleges expect from the main essay and their respective supplements. I always enjoy helping students brainstorm, write, and edit.
